Opportunities are the individual scholarships within a universe. When an applicant applies to a universe, they will fill out a common application. Based on an applicant’s answers and if eligibility rules have been set for the common application or individual opportunities, the applicant will then be eligible or ineligible for either all scholarships within the universe or individual opportunities. Adding new opportunities to a universe currently accepting applications requires retesting. Adding an opportunity includes creating the opportunity record, updating the application form with any new questions needed for eligibility, building eligibility rules, and updating the evaluation form.

Add an Opportunity to:
- Add a new scholarship to a universe that was not part of the original setup.
- Expand offerings mid-cycle after the universe is already open to applicants.
- Configure eligibility criteria, supplemental questions, and evaluation questions specific to the new opportunity.

Set the CommunitySuite Scholarship for an Opportunity or Process provides information on the ability to set a CommunitySuite scholarship per opportunity in Scholarship Lifecycle Manager (SLM) for integrated sites between SLM and CommunitySuite.
Add an Opportunity to a Universe
To add an opportunity to a universe, create the opportunity record, update the application form with any new questions needed, build eligibility rules, and update the evaluation form.
The steps below show how to add an opportunity to your universe. If the universe is active, complete these steps and then retest your eligibility results after adding the opportunity and eligibility rules.
- Click Tools in the upper navigation bar, and then click Process Manager.
- Click the universe name.

Click the Applicant Opportunities tab.
Opportunities can be alphabetized or exported. Follow the steps outlined in Universal Application: Alphabetize and Export Opportunities.
- Click Add Opportunities.
- Enter the name of the opportunity, and then click OK.

Click the pencil icon to edit the opportunity to include descriptions.
- The applicant description appears on the confirmation page after an applicant submits the universal application.
- The evaluator description is visible to evaluators when they complete their evaluations.

If applicable, set the CommunitySuite scholarship record on the opportunity.
Only complete this step in a Live site.
Update the Application Form
To confirm the application collects the information needed for the new opportunity’s eligibility criteria, review existing questions, add any additional questions needed, and then configure the questions for the common application or the individual opportunity. See Universal Application: Edit the Application for more information.
- Click the Application tab.
- Click the pencil icon to the right of the application.
- Review existing questions to confirm all eligibility criteria are covered.

For any missing criteria, navigate to the appropriate location in the application and click Add Question.
Eligibility Question
For questions tied to eligibility rules, use a Special Format Text Question or List Question type.
If all applicants need to respond to the question to determine eligibility, leave it as a common question.
If the question applies only to this opportunity, click the Applicant Opportunities tab within the question, uncheck Common Question, and select the applicable opportunity. Refer to Universal Application: Supplemental Questions for more information.
You can also choose to add an Eligibility Criteria check box question that captures information for other niche scholarships. This is a more streamlined approach rather than asking a yes/no question for each criteria point.
Build Eligibility Rules
You will need to build eligibility rules for the new opportunity and test/retest them. These resources provide guidance for building, testing, and retesting eligibility rules:
Update the Evaluation Form
To add evaluation questions specific to the new opportunity:
- Navigate to the Universe Summary page.
- Click the Evaluation tab.
- Click the pencil icon for the stage you would like to edit.
- Click Add Question and select the question type.
- Enter the applicable question information.
- Click the Applicant Opportunities tab within the question, click the box next to Common for common evaluation questions and click the box next to the applicable scholarship for opportunity-specific questions.
- Click Save Question.
